NW Open Access Programs


The Access and Habitat Program in Oregon and Feel Free to Hunt program in Washington offer minimal to zero-cost recreational opportunities for the public on Weyerhaeuser properties year-round.

In addition to our lease and permit programs, Weyerhaeuser has several acres of year-round recreational land enrolled in open access programs. The land enrolled in these programs are for day use only and the majority of these areas are for non-motorized access. Non-motorized access still allows recreators the opportunity to hike, bicycle or ride horseback into an area. During hunting season, some of the gates located on these properties are opened for a short period of time to allow for vehicle travel. In order to hunt on these properties, a state issued hunting license is required. Given the wide range of land that these areas cover, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and recreate, whether that’s hunting in the Columbia River Gorge or fishing for salmon and steelhead on the Oregon Coast.

In Oregon we offer 180,716 acres of open access land for hunters and recreators. This land is enrolled within ODFW's Access and Habitat program. Many of the properties enrolled are for non-motorized access only but some are open to vehicle travel during hunting season and the gates will be opened for day use only. WDFW's Feel Free to Hunt Program in Washington State affords open access opportunities to hunters and recreators on 12,199 acres of Weyerhaeuser property in SW Washington. Many of these areas are along shared roads where you may park your vehicle and access via non-motorized travel. Others are non-motorized access only and require parking outside of a gate. The rules and guidelines to access our properties enrolled within Feel Free to Hunt in Washington are as follows:

  • Obey all signs and do not enter active work areas.
  • Access is allowed 7 days a week from 1 ½ hours before official sunrise to 1½ hours after official sunset.
  • No overnight camping.
  • No campfires.
  • No firewood cutting.
  • Smoking is not allowed outside of vehicles.
  • Fireworks are prohibited.
  • Motorized vehicles are required to be licensed and street legal with a properly functioning exhaust. Vehicles must stay on rocked roads.
  • No ATVs, ORVs, side by sides or motorcycles (even if street legal).
  • Vehicles blocking gates will be towed at owners' expense.
  • Rock hounding, digging, gold panning, or removal of any rocks or minerals is prohibited
  • No target or skeet shooting.
  • No Removal of Specialty Forest Products. These products include but are not limited to; truffles, boughs, salal, fern fronds, moss, bark, roots, seedlings, transplants, Christmas trees, bear grass, shrubs, cedar, and yew.
  • No trapping.
